Everyday life is made of things we do without thinking about them.

We prepare, clean, carry, cook, wait, rest, work and repeat.
Most of these gestures are so ordinary that they become almost invisible,
absorbed into the rhythm of everyday life.
Yet they are the small actions through which places function and lives continue.

During my journey across Asia, I gradually found myself looking less at
what places were supposed to show me and more at what happened within them.
I began to stay longer, to observe what usually escapes a traveller’s attention,
and to recognise a rhythm in the repetition of ordinary gestures.

What started as an attempt to understand the rituals of the places I was visiting slowly
became an observation of something more universal.
The gestures changed from one place to another, but their purpose often remained the same: keeping life moving.

This book is not a collection of extraordinary moments.
It is an attempt to look at the ordinary without taking it for granted.

Because perhaps the things we do every day are not simply what fills our lives.
Perhaps they are what makes life.
